Juniper and McKown Points Column: Tennis, annual meeting and more

Mon, 08/08/2022 - 11:00am

Juniper Point is a place with many traditions. This week was full of them!

The annual tennis tournaments were taking place with the twins winning the Ladies doubles, the young ones beating the establishment in the men’s double and the mixed doubles won by Cammie and her son who had a special incentive to do well.

On Saturday the pancakes were served with all the trimmings followed by inspiring demonstration tennis featuring our tennis pros and their friends.

The singles matches are still not completed; we’ll have to report on those next week.

Our annual meeting which usually takes place around the 3rd week of July was moved to Aug. 7 and saw a record turnout. Members were not only filling the community house but also connecting through zoom. Obviously our membership is widely involved in the well-being of our association. The meeting was opened by everyone joining in singing ‘How beautiful, the state of Maine’ under the guidance of Art Barnes. Art does have a request that we fix the piano. We are happy to report Ann Swope will be moving to a new position in our organization. Ann will be the communications chair in charge of keeping the website organized and updated, as well as monitoring our social media platform on Facebook. Cynthia Gagne and Jean Dilley will be co-chairs for the lobster bake. Thank you ladies! You’re the best!

A vote was taken to proceed with the amendment of our by-laws. In 30 days another vote will be taken to possibly accepting the new by-laws. Mark your calendar!

While the chowder cook off is not a long standing tradition, we do hope to pick up the momentum where we left off two years ago. Our champions Becky Taylor and Kristen Gray will be defending their title on Saturday Aug. 13. Unfortunately, Gur will be on his way back to Florida and Kristen will be going back to Gabon. Which chefs will step up and take their place? Please send an email to josemccomiskey@comcast.net if you are able to bring a chowder to compete. All other people are encouraged to buy a ticket at the door to taste all the delicious chowders and cast a vote.

A new activity in our community took place on Rock Road. 4 members got together at Bev McCoid’s cottage to play Mahjong. Send an email to tharris33@icloud.com if you are interested in joining next time.

Next week’s report from Juniper and McKown Point will be written by Kit Andrews. Please send any information you wish to share to her: kitandrewsvt@yahoo.com
