Juniper and McKown Points Column: Stories, Field Day and more

Mon, 07/19/2021 - 12:45pm

Mid-July and the plants are either drowning or being eaten by chipmunks. Geraniums don’t stand a chance with wet feet. Wish we could say the same about the chipmunks.

Last week’s “Story Telling and History” at the Community House was skillfully led by Kit Andrews. Kit was practically born on the Point and has a good memory and interest in its history. Fourteen of us listened to each other and learned fascinating details. For example, the little green shed at Blake’s, straight across from Pooler Road, was originally one of Manley Reed’s workshops – for iron working, among other uses. It blends so well into the scenery now that you don’t think about it. And, as Andy Matthews and others remember, the post office, larger than what it is now, used to be a coffee shop. I’ll admit this was my first attendance at these twice a summer events and if you’ve never gone, you definitely should attend the next one on Aug. 19 at the Gillies cottage.

For further enlightenment, Leslie Lipschitz will give a talk on economics at the Community House early Thursday evening (either tomorrow night or tonight, depending upon when you read your Register). Yes, that’s a big field of study, but he has promised there will be no mathematical formulas to remember. JPVIS has sent a reminder email.

The Wilkinson family is gathering this week with Patrick visiting from Charleston, Katherine and her partner Rachel from New York, and Jenn and Dan (who met as teens on George’s field) with their boys Zane and Spike driving from Hood River, Oregon. Kathy is here, taking a break the busy real estate business in Charleston.

Last Saturday was the annual Field Day. Vanessa Lipschitz and Christina Edwards, with assistance from Dave, led the kids in every outdoor game possible. Hits were the egg in the spoon race, three-legged race (where some parents partnered up with the tots), gunny sack races and the mummy races. It was lots of fun and the young participants Margaret, Sam, Wyatt, Rowan, Reilly, Ella, Claire, Abby, Katherine, CJ, Isla and Dean thoroughly earned and enjoyed their Popsicles at the end.

Tennis this week has been covered in other publications, but it should be noted that every match with another association, this time Christmas Cove, is always described by Dave as challenging and fun all around, never a mention of winners. According to one parent, however, the facts are that JPVIS ruled the courts last week at our away match. Good job, Juniors!

It’s a wonder there wasn’t an emergency on Pooler Road with the two big birthdays at the Edwards’ cottage. The cakes must have been a-blazing. Both Peter and Christina had significant birthdays during the time Christina and Julie were here on the Point to help Peter into another quarter century. Congratulations!

Good news, Andy Matthews teamed up with our Membership Chairperson Dave Kynor to produce a printed membership directory for this summer. We hope to have it available soon at the Community House, maybe by the end of this week. A big help for the Boomers among us who find it easier to reach for a paper directory than fumbling to enter our emails and passwords into the computer each time we need to re-remember a name or two. Thanks, guys.

Send your news or nonsense in by Sunday and you’ll see it in print. Please support the Register, without which we would not have this column. Thanks. annedooley@mindspring.com
