Juniper and McKown Point: History, sports and more

Tue, 07/17/2018 - 10:30am

A sigh of relief was heard from Route 27 to the DMR as the Fourth of July visitors drove off. It seemed for the last two weeks every bed, pillow and parking spot at every cottage was taken. Thankfully fabulous weather kept everyone busy outdoors. Kit reports that it’s quiet at the Andrews cottages now that the extended family and friends of Lee Corbin have left. For two weeks every July, the activities of Lee’s daughter Chris and family, son Gordon and family, and good friends Emily and Greg Williams and sons flow back and forth across McKown Point Road and Kit and family get happily caught up in all of it. During that time the Andrews hosted cousins from Vermont, Kit’s daughters Nel and family from Baltimore and Margo and Family from New Jersey. Goodbyes have been said and Rue Judd is back in residence in the Corbin cottage.

The Dooley’s contributed to the count with Carl and Angie here from Boston, with toddler Maria and their dog Chewie. The Oakland Dooley’s, Brook and Andrea, joined them at the Dilley’s Upper Cottage along with Angie’s mother Gail Milton. Their sons Liam and Quinn and the dog stayed with Nana at Firefly.

History night at the Gillies cottage was a fascinating event according to the hosts, John and Patti. Two of those attending can trace their families in Boothbay back to the early 1800s. Sandy Swope has done many hours of research and was able to add a lot of details about the ownership history of land on the Point. Also attending were Kitsy Andrews, Art and Helene Barnes, Phil Rubel, Curt Harding, Celia Hinrichs (whose grandmother Florence Hinrichs moved their cottage across the harbor by barge), Nancy Judge, Andy and Penny Matthews, Tracy Robinson, George Ross, Don and Debbie Snyder, Terry Paetzold (our newest neighbor in the Music Box cottage), Bev McCoid and Nancy Glude Kelly (who lived in the Welch House from 1949 to 1956 when her father was the director of the marine lab at what is now DMR). The Welch House came down two summers ago and your correspondent can attest that the new view is not only appreciated by the neighbors but acts as a traffic calmer as many cars now slow down on the curve to enjoy looking out to the open water.

JPVIS Improvement/Clean-up Day last Saturday morning was lightly attended but might made up for the numbers (a teenager brought the average age down a decade or so) and they got several grounds projects accomplished. Thanks to Robert Moser, Jon Sylvester and Liam Dooley for making the JPVIS paths a little more user friendly.

In tennis news, the Women's Night Round Robin on Tuesday, July 10 was a fun event with 9 ladies participating.  Partners were changed throughout the evening, wine, beer, and homemade snacks were enjoyed by the players and spectators and the ladies played through dusk!

The Junior Interclub team played Christmas Cove on Friday, July 13.  The juniors that participated in the match were Gus McGee, Micaela Brown, Maeve Zimmer, Tessa Stevens, Phoebe Lewis, Hailey Rosenberg, Soren Zimmer, Emma Mansourian, Ryan Lewis, Oliver Mansourian, Kieran Garey, Liam Dooley, Molly Roth, Tracey Rosenberg, Buck Lewis, Max Mansourian, Evelyn Moser, and Charlotte Moser.  Good sportsmanship, lots of laughs and socializing, and some hard fought points were the highlights.  The Juniper Point crew came out with a few more wins in the end.

Next up the junior team heads to Squirrel Island on Friday, July 20. Boat drivers would be helpful but the Novelty is an option as well.  We also will be having a Mixed Doubles Round Robin on Friday night, July 20.  No partner necessary.  Talk to Dave 860-655-3062 or Susan 904-708-9814 for details.

Pack a picnic lunch for JPVIS Burnt Island/Field Day this Saturday, July 21 from 1-4. Join in games, explore the island and visit with friends while experiencing all that Burnt Island has to offer, including tours of the light house. Boat transportation is provided from the JPVIS Dock (the one at the very end of Massachusetts Road) beginning at 12:45 with boat shuttles returning from the island starting at 3:30. Thanks to Emily Whiting for organizing and please contact her with any questions or, better yet, to volunteer to help. Emily.whitingdc@gmail.com.

Next week’s columnist is Susan Schadler. Please send her news and announcements at susanschadler@gmail.com within the next couple of days.
