Boothbay Region YMCA: Community Catalyst for Good

In her own Words: Jane Davison, BRYMCA Volunteer

My name is Jane Davison. In March of 2020 I moved here from Geneva, New York to be closer to family. Back in New York, I worked as an aide in a private school for 42 years before I retired to Boothbay Harbor with my cat, Mocha. I like to exercise at the Y, go for long walks, and write murder mysteries in my spare time. One of my favorite things to do now is volunteer in the community.

I have always loved to volunteer. It means a lot to me, and it gets me out of the house! It’s a chance to help, and it makes me feel good. When I’m helping someone else, I'm not thinking of myself. It’s one of those “feel good” situations. I encourage others to volunteer because it’s a gift that constantly gives. I always feel that you get more than you give!

Right now, I volunteer two days a week with the Development Department at the Boothbay Region YMCA. I assist with mailings and other office tasks. I also volunteer one day a week delivering food to other seniors for the local Meals on Wheels program. In the past, I have volunteered at animal shelters, summer camps, and with the Red Cross.

Every time I am here at the Y, whether to participate in a Sit and Stretch class, a personal training session, or to volunteer, I find that I thank the staff more times than they can keep up with. The Y is important to me and the community, and I would be lost if it wasn’t here. Coming to the Y several times a week gives me something to look forward to, and being part of something important to the community has many rewards.

It’s the members, staff and volunteers that make the Y the special and welcoming place that it is!

Note: The Y welcomes volunteers! If you are interested in coaching, gardening, helping maintain trails out at Camp K, being a lifeguard or helping with mailings, check out the link at https://boothbayregionymca.org/volunteer.html and/or email Lisa McIntosh at lmcintosh@brymca.org
