Heckuva job, Blondie!

Mon, 05/11/2020 - 3:30pm

    Dear Editor:

Rewind to September 2005. New Orleans and surrounding Gulf Coast communities are a shambles, with over 1,800 Americans dead and $125 billion in damage. On national TV, George W. Bush praises his Arabian-horse-breeding expert and FEMA director, Michael Brown, telling him, “Brownie, you’re doing a heckuva job!”

Ten days later, Brownie resigns his government sinecure in disgrace.

Fast forward to May 2020. The United States leads the world in confirmed COVID-19 cases (1,283,929) and deaths (77,180). Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and head of the White House shadow coronavirus task force, tells Fox News, “This is a great success story.” His father-in-law, having given himself “a 10 out of 10” rating for handling the pandemic in March, now declares victory over “the Chinese virus” and is preparing us for The Greatest Comeback Story, his reelection.

Five long years ago at a raucous campaign rally, Trump yelled, “You’re going to be sick and tired of winning!” Promise made, promise kept. We are very sick now, and unbearably tired — of him.
