January 2020 winter gathering in Edgecomb
Fri, 01/24/2020 - 7:30am

It was obvious that Jane and I arrived late to Jack and Barbara Brennan’s home on Saturday, Jan. 19. Cars and trucks were parked for a long distance along both sides of the road as we drove into Quarry Farm Road in Edgecomb. We were very happy to find an open space to park near the house. We arrived an hour late due to an officiating commitment, to find a jovial crowd of 40 to 50 DEYC members engaged in familiar conversations, the pending storm, the fortunate club members in Florida, winter and spring plans, etc.

We immediately joined the friendly crowd enjoying great food and favorite drinks. As always, master host and hostess, Jack and Barbara Brennan had prepared a generous food and drink spread while guests had added greatly to the selections of fantastic hot and cold appetizers, fresh veggies, sweets and desserts.

Jack asked the crowd to toast and remember our adored and recently deceased members, Alice Thompson and P/C Edgar Reed II. Club members have memories of Alice’s kind and thoughtful advice on a variety of topics pertaining to the Yacht Club. She was an influential member of the Board of Directors. Edgar served the club as Commodore from 1976-1977. He had a very accommodating manner and he was an accomplished mariner. He will be remembered by all Club members for his water skiing adventures. He waterskied not once, but twice from Boothbay Harbor to the Portland Yacht Club in 1953 and again in 1985! Remarkable!

Pete Yesmentes reminded us that our “Day Tripper” events were beginning a sixth year. He offered his thoughts for this year’s Day Tripper Events and sought ideas from the group. Administrative Assistant, Jane Mulholland announced important reminders, including several upcoming deadlines.

Many small energized groups continued enjoying lively conversation well into the evening. The ride home was a challenge due to the slippery roads caused by newly fallen snow. We look forward to our next winter gathering. Paul and Louise Cowan will host the event at their home in Trevett on Feb. 22.
