The DaPonte String Quartet kicks off its 28th year with a series that blankets southern and Midcoast Maine. The program, “Through the Looking Glass,” features works by Shostakovich, Bartók and Haydn.
The musicians, violinists Ferdinand "Dino" Liva and Lydia Forbes, cellist Myles Jordan and Kirsten Monke on the viola will play these featured works: Franz Josef Haydn’s “String Quartet No. 1 in B flat Major Op. 1,” Dmitri Shostakovich’s “ String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor Op. 110’” and Bela Bartok’s “String Quartet No. 4 Sz. 91.”
This year’s schedule also includes two free preview performances: Feb. 21 at noon at the Portland Public Library and on March 16 at the Cumberland Library at 10 a.m.
Full March concert schedule: March 9 in Georgetown, Robinhood Free Meetinghouse, 7:30 p.m.; March 16 in Rockport’s Opera House at 2 p.m.; March 17 in Damariscotta, Lincoln Theatre at 2 p.m.; March 21 in Portland, Jewish Museum at 7:30 p.m.; March 23 in Boothbay Harbor at St Columba’s Episcopal Church at 2 p.m., and on March 24 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Brunswick at 2 p.m.
The DaPonte String Quartet, Maine’s premier string ensemble, was founded in 1991 and now performs year-round, over 50 times a year from Presque Isle to Ogunquit.
