Caring community

Dear Editor:

I want to send a heartfelt thank you to all the people who have opened their hearts to contribute to the GoFundMe page (Mayday) that was set up to help with Bani Witt's recovery battle with stage III ovarian cancer, which was diagnosed Nov. 21 2018, the same day she was sworn in as a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Bani has been a hardworking member of the Boothbay Harbor community for the past 10 years and has made many friends from around the world as she has worked in various hotels in the region. She is known for her attention to details and her efficient work ethic. She is originally from Lima, Peru and although we spend winters in Florida her heart is in Boothbay Harbor/Southport, Maine as she is now truly a Mainer.

Please continue to pray for her as she has begun an 19-week regimen of weekly chemotherapy treatments. She has gone from a normal weight of 120 pounds to 97 pounds, as of yesterday (Jan. 17) and even though she has an appetite there are times she can't eat because of excessive fluids in her abdomen which need to be removed on an almost weekly basis. Two days ago, 3800ml of plasma were extracted.

She is in unbearable pain from time to time when painkillers wear off and it is her firm belief and faith in God that is keeping her alive and interested in winning this battle with this terrible disease. Please say a prayer for her and know that she is grateful for all the kindness that has been shown to her from all of her family, neighbors, and friends.

Bruce Witt
