‘Building Great Gingerbread Houses’ class
Building a house can be fun, especially when no permits, no inspections, no architects and few rules are involved. Those who’ve created a gingerbread house, or castle, for the annual Gingerbread Spectacular at the Opera House in Boothbay Harbor already know that creativity and lots of strategic icing, along with some well-placed gumdrops, will go a long way in the construction of an award-winning entry. The Gingerbread Spectacular is set for Dec. 16-17, and in preparation, the Opera House is hosting a Building Great Gingerbread Houses class on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
Instructor, and gingerbread master, Kevin Kiley will share tips on successful construction methods including “How to Keep the Roof On,” “Delicious Landscaping” and “Chimneys You’ll Want to Eat,” among other topics. The class is free for both novice creators and seasoned gingerbread contractors. All ages are welcome but those under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Supplies and recipes will be provided.
The class will begin at 3 p.m. in the main performance hall at the Opera House, 86 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor. Those interested in participating are asked to register in advance by calling the Opera House at 207-633-6855.
Those interested in creating an entry for this year’s Gingerbread Spectacular, but not planning to attend the house building class, are encouraged to call the Opera House to pre-register for the Spectacular. Each year prizes are awarded at the Gingerbread Spectacular for an array of gingerbread creations. Winners are announced at the Dec. 15 Dough Ball at the Opera House. This year’s Gingerbread Spectacular is sponsored by The First National Bank.
