Brown’s Wharf mattress giveaway appreciated by community

Twenty-four double and two king size mattresses and box springs were being given away to anyone who needed, or wanted one, on May 4.
Holly Stover, well-known in the Boothbay area for her generosity in helping the community in many different ways, was at Brown’s Wharf overseeing the mattress giveaway, along with Tim Brown and several strong men offering a helping hand wherever needed.
“The Browns replace the mattresses in their rooms as regular maintenance every few years,” Stover said. “And of course they are only used around 100 days a year.”
The mattresses and box springs given away were all high-quality Sertas, and could have passed for brand new. “We have covers that we put on all of them, and we rotate them and flip them regularly,” Brown said. Asked why he doesn’t sell the “good as new” mattresses, Brown said he could, but would rather give them away. “People are real appreciative, and we like helping them.”
Brown said several mattresses and box springs had been given away on the previous Thursday, too. “They have gone all over the county.”
Cindy Blanton and Taylor Dunn, who moved to Boothbay Harbor from North Carolina a year ago March, were the recipients of a double mattress and box spring. Dunn said they just moved into a new apartment and needed a bed. The couple will both be working at the Boothbay Harbor Country Club this summer.
“On behalf of Boothbay Region Community Resource Council, we would like to thank the Brown family for offering this donation of mattresses and box springs,” Stover said in an email. “The Brown family has provided support of our neighbors in need quietly and without a lot of recognition. For all they do, we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation.”
The last mattress left the parking lot at around 1 p.m., and a lot of lucky people got a good night’s, ‘Serta-perfect’ sleep that night.
