BRLT summer staff return

Summer has arrived to the Boothbay region, and that means the return of seasonal staff on Damariscove Island as well as the arrival of BRLT’s summer intern at Oak Point Farm. These supporting staff help ensure that the land trust’s public lands are accessible and well-maintained during the growing season, and provide essential support for BRLT’s programming and operations during the busy summer months.

At Damariscove Island, BRLT is pleased to welcome back returning caretakers Aiko Pandorf and Scott Peterson for their second summer. Last year, Scott and Aiko did a remarkable job overseeing the trails on Damariscove, as well as welcoming and supporting visitors throughout the summer. During the off-season, Scott and Aiko call California’s Bay area home. However, their longtime connection to Casco Bay has brought them back to Maine during the summer for over 20 years. The two enjoyed getting to know Damariscove Island and meeting and talking with its many visitors last summer. BRLT could not be more thrilled to have them back again.

The land trust is also happy to introduce summer intern, Emma Heffner. Emma is a recent graduate of University of Vermont, with a degree in environmental studies. She comes to BRLT with a wealth of experiences including interning at another Vermont land trust and working with Maine Conservation Corps. Her educational and work experiences provide a valuable skill set that will enable Emma to support the stewardship of BRLT trails, easements, and conservation land. This summer Emma will also be focusing on developing her skills in environmental education and programming. Working alongside BRLT Environmental Educator, Tracey Hall, Emma will have the opportunity to work on educational planning and teaching skills.

"I am very excited for the opportunity to work with BRLT,” Emma notes. “I look forward to learning more about conservation efforts along the coast and the incredible impact they have not only on the natural environment but the entire community as well."

During the summer months Emma will also be staffing the Oak Point Farm visitor center on Saturdays between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., greeting guests and answering questions. Her presence will enable weekend visitors to pick up maps, ask questions, explore the nature center or use the restrooms. We all look forward to a great summer with our additional team members.
