Boothbay varsity baseball out, middle school team safe

Boothbay Region High School will not field a varsity baseball team this spring, but the middle school will. High school officials decided against offering baseball this spring due to a low number of participants. Baseball Coach Ed Crocker reported last week only 12 players signed up for the team. “We need about 14 players to offer baseball. There were also concerns if we started the season with 12 players about fielding a competitive team. Many were inexperienced, so there were concerns about losing players to injury, work obligations and grades also factored into the decision.”

Boothbay Region Elementary School has 15 players and begins spring practice April 12. The Wildcats’ first game is May 4.

“We have a nice group returning that played as sixth graders. Even with last season lost to COVID, we have players that have played on a regulation-sized field. We should be competitive,” Coach Smith Climo said.
