The Boothbay Region Masters and Junior teams won gold medals for combined team skills at the Southern Maine Special Olympics Soccer Contest Oct. 20. Boothbay Region Special Olympics Coach Toby LeConte said the athletes were shocked to place so well and were excited to see old friends and compete with other teams in person this year.

The teams were also coached and supported by Don Dickson, Roberta Blaney and Mary Pawlowski among several other volunteers, said LeConte. Masters and Junior team members included Ronda LeConte, Donny Dunning, Joey Ranco, Danny Miller, Blake Chadwick, Amber Hyson, Valerie Giles, Vincent Giles, Grace Giles, Zander Blake, Anthony Angelico, Jameson Brooks and Ariana Flores.

LeConte said Flores, a new team member, competed as a Special Olympian for the first time and won a gold medal. “Everyone was so proud of their hard work … and old, young athletes played together … The weather this year cooperated, too. It was a great day for all.”
