Boothbay Region Lions Club

Tue, 06/01/2021 - 10:30am

The Boothbay Region Lions Club met for a regular meeting on May 26. Kudos to the kitchen crew; a delicious dinner prepared by Lion Jay, with a yummy desert made by Lion Duane.

We voted to send donations to Life Flight, to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, and to the Boothbay Region Alumni Association to help out with renting tuxedos for the senior boys for the Grand March. We also are donating our “Dimes for Dogs” funds to Canines for Companions, a veterans’ program.

Lion Wendy, our Eyeglass program chair, reported that used eyeglasses continue to be dropped off in our boxes at the mall and at the library.  She recently received a call from the library that their box was full, now that the library is opening up with the relaxing of COVID restrictions.  We really appreciate the community support for this very worthwhile project.

Lion Karen, our Zone chair, reported that the first training session for next year’s new officers went well.  Karen presented the session for new secretaries.

We voted to donate to the retiring District Governor to help with reimbursement for expenses for the past year.  There is a lot of time and travel involved in this position.

Reservations are coming in for our trip to Cabbage Island at the end of June.  Lion Karen reported 94 as of this date.  The boat capacity has been increased to 175.  Lions Barbara and Glenn will be in charge of the 50/50 raffle on the boat to the island.  We voted to give the proceeds of the raffle to Food for Thought (the school hunger program).

We will be serving a free hot dog lunch in the parking lot at the club on Friday, July 16, for the boatyard employees as well as the local neighborhood.

We continue to discuss ideas for community service projects for the coming year.  We will research providing vision screening in the schools.

At the end of our meeting our Tail Twister Lion Mark asked that everyone donate in honor of our veterans as Memorial Day Weekend is coming up.

Our next meeting on June 9 will be our annual awards night.  We will be bringing our spouses or guests for a prime rib dinner.
