Boothbay Region Food Pantry contributions rise
The Boothbay Region Food Pantry is, once again deeply grateful for the amazing generosity of this community. Contributions have significantly increased since the administration’s announcement of cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as SNAP. Food and money collections by a number of local organizations will make a real difference in the lives of our neighbors.
BRFP is working on procedures that will attempt to cover the lack of SNAP benefits. Although Governor Mills announced that the full benefit would be paid during the usual timeframe (Nov. 10-14), President Trump has just decreed that only 65% of the usual benefit can be paid by the states, such as Maine, that had moved ahead with distributions. As of Nov. 10 this is the administration’s position. A useful way to check on the situation would be to check out the DHHS website : https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/ofi/federalshutdown which seems to be the most up to date on the interface between Maine and the federal government.
There is another segment of our local population that is also feeling the effects of government policies -- federal employees. many of whom are required to work without pay. The largest segment of these in Boothbay are the indispensable Coast Guard. Starting immediately the Food Pantry will be available every 14 days for all unpaid federal employees working or living on the peninsula. Although the Senate seems to be moving ahead with reopening the government this will not happen overnight.
Considering that SNAP benefits are not (as of 11/10) fully funded, anyone affected by this cut may also come to the Pantry every 14 dqys. Bring EBT cards as proof of SNAP participation. Stay informed as the situation seems to change from one day to the next. Distribution of vouchers will not increase but remain the same for our registered clients.
Holiday vouchers will soon be available for our regular clients.
Our great thanks to all in the community who are helping to make this all possible.
