What an exciting week it was at the BHYC! Midshipmen from the Naval Academy Ocean Racing teams joined club youngsters from the Junior Program for some fun sailing and offered tours and sails on the Academy boats. The ensigns and coaches stayed through the weekend, joining One Design crews for Sunday’s racing on a very iffy day for sailing. Nate Cagle reports seven boat crews  shrugged off the less than ideal weather to enjoy a fun race.

The four-person 2021 Sears Cup qualifier BHYC team continued to prepare for next month’s national championship at the Seguin Island Trophy race last weekend, this time at the helm of a J/80. We’re all cheering on this team of BHYC youth!

Saturday and Sunday, the 24th and 25th is the 47th BHYC Regatta and Shipyard Cup Classics Challenge. Fingers crossed for fair winds and calm seas.

The BHYC Book Club meets Wednesday the 21st to discuss “The Woman Who Smashed Codes” by Jason Fagone. This is the fascinating story of Elizabeth Smith Friedman, the unlikely heroine who outwitted America’s enemies. The Book Group always welcomes new members who love to read.

On Tuesday, the 27th the Suddenly Skipper or Confidence in Command Course-Part 1 will be offered.  The class takes place at the clubhouse from 8:30. Any members who want to brush up on their captaining skills should sign up for this helpful course.

Club Manager Tom Serino reports the dining room is fully staffed and working well together. Chef Raymond continues to serve excellent menu choices beautifully prepared and presented. A big thank you to the Indoor Flower Committee;  they make sure all are greeted at the front desk with gorgeous flower arrangements from members gardens. Well done!

We’re nearly into August when Maine’s dry air and sunshine typically emerge from July’s fog. This writer looks forward to sunnier days.
