Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club

A lot has been going on around BHYC for the past two weeks. The last week in March found 40 some hearty revelers in New Orleans for our Winter Reunion. Jeff and Ella Long and Walter and Martha Weil stepped up robustly for the intricate planning of a seamless dip into The Big Easy. It was a wonderful escape from mud season. Few states can claim 5 seasons … spring, summer, fall, winter and mud season. Mother Nature is messing with us as I write Monday. An April snow is flocking our town once again. There are 12 Boothbay Region High School program sailors who will definitely have an “on-land instruction” day this afternoon.

It was a much nicer day on March 30 when a large group arrived to Celebrate Walter “Scotty” Scott’s 96th birthday. Scotty is second only to John Druce as our oldest member. Alice and Andy Mutch and I along with the Flag Officers hosted this very special tribute to a beloved member. I’ve know Scotty for over 40 years as he was my father’s dearest friend.

And then came April 1 … And no fooling – our new general manager started his first day on board. Tom Serino comes to BHYC with a wonderful career history in club management in Connecticut. Tom also has worn the chef’s hat in several restaurants which he created and managed. His wife Debbie will continue to work as a paralegal in Fairfield. Their ultimate goal is to live here as their daughter and son-in-law and 2-year-old grandson live on North Haven. Welcome aboard Tom.

In spite of the snow, which is currently near white out, the season is fast upon us. Behind the scenes Tom, Donna Brewer, Kitty Chapman, Marion Flores along with Team Leader and Vice Commodore Liz Rettenmaier are working diligently to roll out the first phase of our new technological management system, Club Essential.

As the song says, “It’s a new dawn and a new day.”
