The final event in our Trifecta of major sail competitions is now in the books and a highly successful event it was. Sailors from all up and down the East Coast gathered for three days of racing (Friday was a practice day race)  with some  major social events for the off water hours. Once again the BHYC race management team came to the forefront and handled not only on-water events but parking, housing and the many little details that are involved in bringing 64 sailors and 16 boats plus family and friends into our community..

The J-80 is a popular boat for both lake and ocean sailors and although the event was won by a team from away our own entrants included Craig and Madeline Preston sailing SKY ROCKET, Jeff Curtis in his SILKIE, Ken Colburn sailing GHOST, Chip Baker in WIRED, and Bill Hunt skipper of FIREBOLT. Our boats finished 4th,7th, 8th, 10th, and 15th  with the Prestons being the surprise and skillful fourth place crew. Full details of the race are shown in a separate Register article.

Social events included  a Friday night cocktail spectacular with music by Phill Brooks and Barry Young, the Saturday night lobster bake  feeding 115 including many members, and a Sunday night cookout following the awards dinner. Thanks to Ken Colburn and Jen Baker for organizing and hosting the event and to all of our members who assisted on both shoreside and on-water activities.

Also in the minutes book from the past week was the talk by Jim McManus of Bigelow Lab, The Thursday night cocktail event hosted by the bridge players, and a Kayak trip to Ocean Point and Negro Island. As we file this article upcoming is the Tuesday Author Series presentation by Louis Sell with a huge signup in the books.

Upcoming on our “in print” publication day (Thursday)  is the Shots & Shots Flu shot Clinic (also a sell out) and Thursday night cocktails by the Barters Island residents.. Saturday is the Day Afloat Extravaganza and the registration book shows a possible record participation for this  always popular “end of summer” event. On Sunday we have the rescheduled “A Sailing Family the Movie”  with barbecue at 5:30 p.m. and the movie starting at 6:30.

Don’t forget to put in your appointment books the Sept. 11 presentation on “Bhutan” by member John Yrchik. And somewhere out there is a BHYC cadre of friends or alliances who will step and “do” the cocktail party on Sept. 6 (call PC Louise if you can and will do it 882-5525)

The Junior Program has ended for the summer but Wednesday night racing continues for the adults and of course the High School sailing team starts its fall season sailing 420s.

September is traditionally the most beautiful time of the year here at BHYC  and your club and its dining room and extensive schedule of events churns ahead to help its members enjoy all.
