    Vacation Week programming

Parents, it’s already here: February Vacation. We know you want to keep your kids off their phones and out doing things, so to that end, BHML has stocked the week with events for families.

It all kicks off this week with drop-in Valentine’s Day card-making from Wednesday, Feb. 12 through Friday, Feb. 14, from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the Children’s Room.

Miss Harolyn will have all of the construction paper, glue, sequins, and ribbons your kids need to create perfect, from-the-heart Valentines for the people they love and classmates they tolerate.

I came up with an amazing Valentine’s Day card this weekend actually. On the front it says: “Our relationship in one word: Ideal” with lots of hearts and sequins.

Then you open it up and on the inside it says: “Our relationship in two words: I Deal.”

Ha! You’re welcome to use it too!

The vacation week fun continues from Tuesday, Feb. 18 through Saturday, Feb. 21 with a Drop-In Lego Bonanza every day between noon and 4 p.m. Miss Harolyn will have all of the library’s Legos out for free build—or, kids can bring their own. We’ll cover the snacks.

Finally, Miss Harolyn has also organized a daily vacation week storytime, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday through Friday. Tuesday’s theme is dinosaurs, with dino crafts, stories, and activities. Wednesday is wheels day, with car-building and hot wheels tube-racing. Then comes Teddy Bear Thursday with a BYO teddy bear indoor picnic and storytime. Finally, Friday is Mardi Gras at the library, with stories and beads.

The Children’s Room has so many great new books for kids and families for you to check out when you visit. We’ve almost finished spending the $3,500 we were awarded in 2018 from the H.W. Wilson Foundation for new non-fiction children’s books, which funded a whole bunch of really great purchases on everything from dinosaurs to history to space science. Look for a display of some of these new titles in the Children’s Room in March.

    New: Chess Club

In grown-ups news, we’re hoping to start a chess club.

Please join Pavel Sulyandziga, member of the U.S. Chess Federation and the Maine Chess Association, for an inaugural meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 5:30 p.m. Snacks will be served, chess boards will be present, and a bi-weekly meeting schedule will be set. If you cannot make this meeting, please email Joanna (director@bbhlibrary.org) or call the library to let us know you would like to participate in the chess club.

We hope to see all of you there!
