There’s just over a week left until the library/Boothbay Sea and Science Center  joint fundraising jazz concert.

A Summer Evening of Jazz with the Marcus and Riza Printup Quartet will be held at The Shipyard at Boothbay Harbor on Saturday, July 20, at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.; ticket holders may choose to arrive at 6 p.m. for a private tour of the Ernestina Morrissey, currently undergoing restoration at The Shipyard.

Tickets are available via our website at bbhlibrary.org, BSSC’s website at www.boothbayseaandsciencecenter.org, or by calling the library at 633-3112.

All proceeds from the concert will fund children’s programming at BSSC and the library. That means story times for toddlers, sailing lessons for kids grades K-12, lessons in science, summer reading, and so much more.

According to Common Sense Media, tweens spend an average of six hours per day on screens, while teens spend nine hours per day on them.

Numbers from the Census Bureau’s 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, which surveyed 40,000 kids, found lower daily averages; 2.75 hours for kids aged 6-10, 3.8 hours for those aged 11 to 13, and 4.6 for the 14- to 17-year-old set.

Whatever the true numbers are, we know that kids shouldn’t spend all day looking at phones and television. Robust children’s programming at BSSC and BHML encourages new skills and hobbies, and keeps physical books in kids’ hands.

We all know that famous saying that it takes a village to raise a child, and it’s true. So please, come out to enjoy a phenomenal jazz concert at the water’s edge with us, and become a part of the village.
