I love a mystery!
Tue, 01/29/2019 - 12:00pm

Winter is surely here. Below freezing temperatures and more than enough snow and ice reminds me of when I was growing up here in the Northeast, sitting by the radio waiting with anticipation for the “no school, all schools today” announcement. Enter the age of technology and by turning on the TV or flipping open your iPad, this information and more is at your fingertips. If sledding or ice skating were impossible, then reading was the next choice. My Nancy Drew Mysteries never let me down.

Our Mystery Book Club has just finished reading In the Bleak Midwinter, the first in a series by Julia Spencer-Fleming. Most of the group enjoyed the book and would recommend it. The series is about a woman Episcopal Priest (Clare Fergusson) and Chief of Police (Russ Van Alstyne). Fleming has received several book awards and was nominated for the Edgar Award for best novel.

I recently read and highly recommend “The Other Wife” by Michael Robotham (2018). It is number nine in a series featuring psychologist Joseph O'Loughlin who struggles with Parkinson's in partnership with hard-drinking, tough-talking homicide detective Vincent Ruiz. Robotham is an Australian born crime fiction writer. His book “Life or Death” received the CWA Gold dagger award in 2015.

John Sandford is one of the library's most popular authors. He is another award winner. John has written 50 fiction books, three non-fiction books, and a book of short stories. He started out as a newspaper reporter and columnist. His most distinguished award was the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing. In his Prey Series, which number 29 to date, Sandford's protagonist is Lucas Davenport, a maverick police detective and war game designer. Number five in the series, “Winter Prey,”is not for the light of heart.

Check our catalog for the availability of the above books in the regular, large print, CD and E-book collections. The staff will be happy to help you.
