Boothbay football defeats Gray-New Gloucester, 34-28

Defensive back Aidric Canada’s interception late in the fourth quarter ended a late Gray-New Gloucester drive and preserved a 34-28 eight-man football victory for Boothbay Region. Boothbay jumped out to a 12-0 first quarter lead with a pair of rushing touchdowns against eight-man football large conference opponent Gray-New Gloucester. 

Ashton McLellan ran for the first on a three-yard run followed by Kayden Ames with a 12-yard rushing score. The Seahawks didn’t score again until late into the second quarter. This time, it was a pass as Ames connected with McLellan on a 35-yard touchdown with 1.7 seconds remaining in the half. Boothbay now led 18-6, but the third quarter belonged to GNG. 

The Patriots scored two third quarter touchdowns giving them a 20-18 lead. In the fourth quarter, the lead switched hands multiple times before Canada’s interception. Ames threw two more touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. He connected with McLellan on a 28-yard pass which gave Boothbay a 26-20 lead.  And with Boothbay trailing 28-26, Ames hit Ryan Amaral on a 71-yard pass for the final touchdown, giving Boothbay a 34-28 lead.

In total, Boothbay amassed 459 yards. Ames completed 16 of 26 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns. Ames was also the top runner with 205 rushing yards. On defense, Connor Wenners and McLellan led the team with 8.5 tackles. Dylan Plummer added eight. 

Boothbay finished the regular season with three wins and four defeats. High school playoffs begin next weekend with No. 6 Boothbay likely facing one of the top three small conference teams.
