Another record setting weekend is in the books and for those who missed it, or for those who can’t quite remember what may have transpired, here is a wrap up of everything that is fit to print in this fine family paper. My apologies to those who prefer to just forget what occurred.
Things started out innocently enough with movie night at the multi-plex. The showing was scheduled for the drive - in but had to be moved as Mother Nature chose Friday evening to put on a beautiful display of lightning and it’s attendant rain over the Bay.
“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” was the film du jour. Young and old enjoyed the Frascella Family pick as well as the snacks provided by the Jordan Popcorn Company. All reports are that the crowd was very well behaved and attentive, hanging on every word on the screen.
The next day, at 8:55 a.m., the morning calm was broken by the shrill wail of the Post Office siren announcing to all citizens that the hour was upon us to gather for the 112th consecutive annual meeting of the Bayville Village Corporation.
The masses who assembled were far different in demeanor than the movie group. Rumors had spread through the Village that a traffic light and a casino would soon be coming to our shores, but thankfully, it soon became apparent that social media had spawned the ugly rumors. People then took their seats and in the end the meeting was quite civil and productive, though the prevailing thought is that the first time chair, who shall remain nameless, left a lot of room for future improvement.
In reality, the meeting was a success thanks to Mr Moderator, Al Roberts, the reluctant star of the day, who brought his expertise and decorum to the proceedings. Of course, the Phil and Al Comedy Show was in full force with the crowd trying to keep up with the brotherly zingers. David Merrill once again entertained the crowd with humor only appropriate for a sewer system report. How many places are there where you can have a town meeting and a Vegas style show at the same time? Next year, it was moved that admission be charged to all attendees. You can avoid the exorbitant Ticketmaster fees by getting your tickets right at the box office. Treasurer Greg Merrill has been hard at work finding various ways to save the Village some substantial money. Thank you Greg! In the end, approximately 90 minutes after the gavel first brought the group to order, another meeting was in the books with unanimous votes on all 29 articles.
Some important issues to be further studied include; crack sealing and care of our roads, changing our current street lights, tennis court repairs, dingy dock work, meeting policies and procedures, expanded use of our website, the security of our electrical grid, a new Bayville street sign and reports in a font size large enough that an average human being might possibly be able to make out a letter or two.
Once the meeting was done, the Village Chair and Table Brigade was then summoned, and in record time were able to set up the waterfront park with tables and seating for 111 people.
At 5, Social Hour to some, and Cocktail Hour to others, began with the firing of the cannon. Those who had created their version of the Bayville Buzz libation handed out their concoctions to the eager judges, hoping that this was the year their talents would be recognized.
David Merrill and Thomas Hultin clearly lapped the field with their home brewed wheat blueberry ale. Delicious! Congratulations on your win.
Another entrant who must be recognized is brother Will Allison for his creativity. He named his drink Under the Stairs as that is where he grabbed a couple of the dustiest bottles he could find and proceeded to mix them together with a little white wine. Will has been babbling incoherently since enjoying his beverage, but the family is relieved the bottles are finally gone.
People then sat down to a Lobster Bake that was amazing! The Roberts; Phil, Karen, Al and Becky went all out in providing a beautiful meal and a very memorable evening for everyone! I don’t believe they had anything to do with the spectacular weather, but knowing a bit about Phil’s connections and his power of persuasion, anything is possible.
The crowd did not give a standing ovation, but we should have as their efforts were worth that and more. I know I speak for everyone, when I say thank you, thank you thank you!
Our house and table have been quite full as 94-year-old Bill is finally up from Florida. The Bake was the perfect opportunity for him to speak with lots of friends he has missed since last summer. It is these connections - along with the view - that make Bayville special.
Cousins JJ and Brian have been staying out well after the bars are closed (remember after parties?) and cousin William from Denver will have joined them by the time you read this.
Many cottages are bursting at the corners this time of year and the Robitialle’s contingent seem to win the award for most time on - and in - the water.
The Binders and Sweets are back for their 29th year at the Purcell cottage. They have been enjoying catching up with our Cronin and Teel cousins from around New England. Fun Island is again at their mooring for water lounging. They have been enjoying their sailing excursions on the Money Talks Too and have been appreciate of the clear, cool weather!
Thanks to all for another fantastic weekend! The calendar is showing the end of summer on the horizon, so let’s make the most of what’s left and even more importantly, make sure you get all your news to thejeffallison@gmail.com
If you haven’t trained for the swim to Cabbage on Aug. 13 yet, don’t worry. All our welcome to join the flotilla of fun and paddle along with the group and then enjoy smoothies on the deck after. Be at the dock ready to go at 9:45 for the 10 a.m. start.
Happy swimming, paddling or whatever else the week brings you!
