Bayville Buzz

Fri, 08/07/2020 - 9:45am

I look at my phone waiting for news to come from each of the cottages. The deadline creeps closer, just word from one cottage would help ... nothing. Since I’m here part time in the village, news is always challenging, but this year especially so.

On top of that, the big stories such as COVID-19 and a shark seem off limits for now. What happened in Harpswell was tragic and my condolences to her family. Hopefully, we will not see another incident like that anywhere near here for many generations.

So, I sit out on the deck looking across the bay for inspiration. I am thankful for such a beautiful  place to social distance in, but I apologize for a less than buzz worthy Buzz. I do find it hard - if not impossible - to complain about anything in this beautiful place.

I am happy to report that once again, the annual Bayville Village Corporation meeting went off without incident. Despite the early morning heat in the outdoor settings, Greg Merrill and his dedicated board of Overseers; Jim Coleman, Joe Rosenbloom and Andrea Nielsen never faltered. Moderator Al kept everyone on the edge of their seats as he cruised through 28 articles.

Probably the most important thing of note was to make sure everyone - residents, guests or renters - slow down and drive as though your kids, grandkids or great grandkids are playing up ahead. Remember, kids can be anywhere! Also,  if you have kids headed off to college, please have them major in sewer design for Bayville and beyond.

Don’t forget, The 8th Annual Swim [kayak, board, etc] to Cabbage is happening this Aug. 16, 8:45 a.m. at the Collins dock.

Jill Albaum and Mark Spencer have undertaken a new project to possibly put a display together in the Community House of the family tree for every cottage. The joke is that there are only 2 walls left after the Fletchers and Merrills trees are done.

The Allison’s have Post Office duty this week, which, if past history is any indication, means Phil has been busy. We can blame brother Will (yes, that Will!) visiting from Denver. There are still some remaining weeks open so do your duty so Phil can cover for you too. We get there, but seems 8 a.m. is too late.

Will and Jillian have passed their COVID  test and will be flying in Monday night. Speaking of flying, Mark Spencer just piloted his last commercial flight. Congratulations on your retirement Spence! Coincidentally, Barbara has been busy planning girls weekends away.

Thanks to whoever has been leaving vegetables at the post office - the zucchini went perfectly with our meal.

Get out your 2021 calendar and circle July 24. That is the date the Bayville Waterfront Festival will be back - bigger and better than ever. I know many of you are wondering how that is even possible, but you don’t want to miss it!

In another observation from the deck and as a reflection of the extreme safety measures being taken these days, the Merrill’s were seen with grandkids tubing behind their dinghy. Stay well everyone and send your news to thejeffallison@gmail.com
