Bayville Buzz: The swim to Cabbage Island

Mon, 08/27/2018 - 3:45pm

Fear not fine citizens of Bayville, this is not the last Buzz of summer 2018, but the door is quickly closing. I have already noticed some lonely looking moorings who have lost their dance partners. Such a shame as the next couple of months can truly be some of the most spectacular times of the year around these parts.

Unfortunately, I will miss most of it too as JJ’s school has begun, as has his football.

Tune in next week as I go through the highlights of the year with additional thanks. I may even throw in a few apologies.

So, this past weekend was beautiful. I headed up Saturday night and left for home on Monday morning. There was hardly room at the Inn for me as I ended up on an air mattress but the food and camaraderie was well worth it!

Not only that, but Sunday morning was the 6th annual Bayville to Cabbage Swim. There were numerous faces from away but I did recognize a few. Organizer Pam Gardiner and her daughters Emma and Charlotte. Myself and sister Karen were there too. Now, to be fair, some of us were in kayaks helping to spot for the swimmers, but why go into those details? By the way, my participation medal looks very nice.

When Pam was asked why she was the only swimmer not wearing a wetsuit, her reply was, “they’re missing out man!” It was a picture perfect day for a two mile swim and the water does continue to be quite warm.

Unlike past years, no participants tried to stow away on the Bennie Alice for a ride back to town and all swam the round trip course. Great job by all!

Pam has literally been swimming circles around some of our islands - I believe Squirrel was her latest - so be on the lookout for Bob or buoy trailing behind her.

If you are driving and see a flash go by, it could be Chris Nielsen on his new wheels.

Have a great week and a wonderful Labor Day weekend everyone!

If you have any news that you have been waiting until the last minute to give me, now is the time.
