Bayville Buzz: An informative column

Mon, 07/12/2021 - 10:00am

Unlike many editions, this week's column is true (at least, I believe so) and informative. This change is due to the simple fact that a couple of individuals wrote me with news from their cottage.

Before I get to those, I need to note that some people were improperly thanked for their help with the proceedings of last weekend. I'm sure they will help in the future, so we won't retract their names, but I do need to add a few people who were left off the list. Kathryn Merrill, Thomas Higdon (Kathryn's fiancée) and Parker Sloboda (Kathryn's son and the winner of the youngest helper award). Another name I forgot was Thomas Hultin, who helped with the clean-up. Thank you all!

This was my first opportunity to meet Thomas and his wife Linda and it was a great pleasure to do so. They are excited to be on the shores of Bayville — and not Reno — right through most, if not all, of October. A belated welcome from the Buzz!

Don't forget to get your cottage info to Julie O'Brien-Merrill by July 14 (that was probably yesterday, so get it to her now please!)

And now, the news from Perry Bradley Jr. (who incidentally, used to scribe for this column as well as the Boothbay Register!) ...

Local “snowbirds” Sue and Perry Bradley recently completed their two-mile seasonal migration from their new home at St. Andrews Village to their summer perch atop West Bayville. Sue’s brother, Charlie Fletcher, arrived on June 29th, just in time to celebrate his 87th birthday with Perry and Sue (who met at Cornell circa 1955 thanks to Charlie and a smidgen of serendipity ... but that’s a story for another day).

With summer in full swing, the Bradley brood is now taking turns occupying The Ledge through mid-July, when the Fletchers take the helm. First to arrive was son Perry, along with his wife Dana and youngest son, Reid, 16. They were joined by eldest son Gus, who is now residing in South Portland, having recently accepted a position with accounting firm Baker Newman Noyes. Still sporting a COVID mop, Gus is quickly assimilating to office life (and reportedly interviewing barbers) after working as a farm hand for much of 2020 while remotely finishing his studies in math and economics at Ohio State. Gus was joined by girlfriend Hadley Britt, a native Mainer whose own Buckeye roots helped overcome her aversion to people from away — at least where Gus is concerned!

Perry and Dana fled Cincinnati for Maine as the hot weather arrived and Brood X subsided. Having recently finished his sophomore year of high school, Reid is chomping at the bit to get his driver’s license and is dropping hints to anyone who will listen about securing a summer job in Boothbay Harbor next year (ideas welcome)! The third Bradley brother, Cole, 21, stayed behind in Cincinnati to finish up training for a new job and to keep an eye on the house and the aging family menagerie.

As Perry and family were packing up to head home, Perry’s twin sister Kate tagged in on July 3 with husband Eric Geiselman and daughter Lily, who is preparing to start a graduate program in genetic counseling at Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis this fall. Kate (as she is about to find out from The Buzz) has graciously agreed to submit more news from the Ledge for next week’s column, so stay tuned! Thank you Perry! (and Kate)

And news from Julie at Lawn Cottage...

David and I are heading out to sea in Mary Alice for our annual Anniversary Cruise. We have intentions to be out for a week or so, ending at Monhegan Island where we honeymooned 42 years ago. Happy anniversary!

Don't forget the Pickleball Tournament, Waterfront Festival and Ice Cream Social happening on July 31 and Movie Night (will not be “Jaws”) on Aug. 6 and BVC annual meeting and Lobster Bake on Aug. 7!
