The Bayville Buzz: The Cabbage Island swim

Tue, 08/20/2019 - 12:00pm

Like lemmings to the sea, 11 fools, um, swimmers, dove off the Collins dock and began their annual journey to Cabbage Island (and back). Pam Gardiner had worked for months, calculating when conditions might offer the best chance of survival for all involved. This year, the allotted time was August 18 at 1 p.m. and as in the past, her prediction was correct. The only miscalculation was when one of the menhaden boats mistook the churning waters for the prized fish and quickly encircled the entire group in their net. That issue was quickly resolved and everyone went on their merry way.

Participants involved were (as always, in alphabetical order so that favoritism cannot be suspected): Jeff Allison, Jared Baker, Lib Butler, Emma and Charlotte Collins, Matt Frascella, Pam Gardiner, Marianne Jordan, K.C. Stover, and Drew and Jennifer Strojney. This year’s winner of the Cramp Champ was Matt. I'm not sure his trophy will displayed with the same sense of pride as his Ruler of the Sea award.

There was also quite the flotilla of support vessels helping keep everyone headed in the right direction and fend off boats in the busy bay. Those brave people included; JJ Allison, Rebecca Baker, Ella Beauregard, Chris Coleman and crew, Craig Collins, Diana Frascella, Lexi Haedrich, Bill LaPointe, David and Julie Merrill and Smokey Stover.

News flash! You are running out of time if you have any news to get to the Buzz before we close the books on another summer. Send it thejeffallison@gmail.com

Another news flash! Due to the fact I can't count, there are still a couple of Bayville Waterfront T-shirts left. They are large size in gray with the large logos. They are $9 each and could be the last of their kind.
