John and Jill Butke are Artists of the Month at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, 4 Oak Street. The exhibit is in the upstairs Community Room and features oil paintings by John and weaving by Jill. Their work can be viewed during normal library hours.

The Butkes’ have a seasonal gallery, The Butke Gallery, on Sawyer’s Island in Boothbay. John and Jill began summering on Sawyer’s Island in 1974 where they eventually purchased the “Sea Roost” cottage in 1979. Upon retiring from their careers as art teachers in Massachusetts in 2005, they moved to their Sawyer’s Island home full-time.

John’s paintings depict the splendor of the Maine landscape and realistically capture the true beauty and allure of coastal Maine. Jill’s woven items combine colors and fibers into woven clothing pieces with a contemporary flair.

The Butke Gallery, 33 Isle of Springs Rd., Boothbay, is open daily June-October by appointment or by chance. Visit or call the gallery, 633-3442.
