‘Art For Art’s Sake’ returns to Southport Island

    The Lincoln Arts Festival Art For Art’s Sake event returns to Southport and Hodgdon Yacht Services Friday, Aug. 26 through Sunday, Aug. 28. Art For Art’s Sake has been held since 1995 and the only year August passed without it was 2020, like everything else. But it’s back and bigger than ever, with more participants taking part in Art Interaction Day than ever before!

    An opening reception kicks off this weekend of all things art Friday, Aug. 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. Get that sneak peek at this year’s offerings, meet the artists, enjoy beverages and enjoy harp music by Suki Flanagan.

    The show is on from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28. These are the days to wander through the boat shed energized by the creative works by Christine Thalia Andersen, artist - oil paintings of the Midcoast and people (past, present and sometimes imaginary); Elise Andersen, Andersen Studio - handcrafted artwork in ceramic, fiber, paintings and prints; Hilary Bartlett, artist - Soft swirling watercolors and highly textured acrylic inks; Andre Benoit, plein air painter, assemblist sculptor - repurposed wood); Jill Butke, fiber artist/weaver - handwoven cotton and wool wearables; John Butke, artist - paintings inspired by Maine landscapes' ever-changing colors and forms; Martha Cowdery and Michael Tomko: At Roads End - artisans/creators - Maine-inspired: locally sourced sea glass creations, hand-painted floor cloths; Rick Dickinson, traditional American Impressionist - oil paintings in classic New England style; Lois Glaser, fine art photographer: nature and abstracts; Don Josephson, American Expressionist painter; Nora Lally, succulent gardener: living art; Leslie Muir-Volpe, fiber artist - mini quilts, punch needle embroidery; Suzanne Norton - jewelry, wall hangings, painted furniture, wire and sea glass assemblage; Fran Scannell, Southport plein-air painter; Lynne Seitzer, artist/Joy to the Wind Gallery - oils, pastels, watercolors, ink; John M. T. Seitzer, artist/Joy to the Wind Gallery - oils, acrylics, pastels, mixed media, watercolors, 3 D; Ursula Smith, weaver - Handwoven textiles for the home; and Betsy Wing - author and artist.

    Saturday, Aug. 27 is Art Interaction Day, when most of the demos and discussion with participating artists happens. Here’s the schedule: Saturday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. - Martha Cowdery and Michael Tomko; artist Fran Scannell, artist Charlie Nowell, and paper artist Rimar Reed; 1-4 p.m. - Christine Thalia Andersen demo and discussion; All day Saturday - Photographer Lois Glaser; artist John M. T. Seitzer; and artist Carol Wiley and artist/artisan Suzanne Norton; All day Saturday and Sunday: Rick Dickinson, Leslie Muir-Volpe

    NEW to Art For Art’s Sake in 2022: Clark Griffith, Apple-Ledge Farm Pottery - Useful, decorative high-fire pottery; all glazes certified lead free/food safe; Ramone Hanley-Warren, artist - acrylic paintings on birch board that depict the artist’s interpretation of the natural world; Charlie Nowell, artist - colorful landscapes of Maine in oil; Carol Wiley, fine artist - oils, acrylics, pastels; still life, landscapes, figurative work; Rimar Reed, paper artist - Altered paper crafts.

    “We are thrilled to be back at the boatyard for the show!” said show organizer Leslie Muir-Volpe. “The Lincoln Arts Festival board is so happy that Hodgdon Yacht Services is able to host the show again this year. It's always fun to transform the huge, empty boat shed from a working space into a beautiful art show.”
