American Legion

Memorial Day is just a few days away! This Saturday, May 22, the flags will be placed at all the veteran grave sites in the Boothbay peninsula. Chris Armstead, our Americanism Officer for the Post, is coordinating this effort and has contracted the person responsible for each of the cemeteries. The Hall will be open at 7:30 a.m. on the 22nd for the flags to be picked up. Flags will be placed at Evergreen Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. As a reminder, if you know of a veteran grave that doesn't have a Legion flag holder, let Chris know by calling 633-4487.

Plans for the Memorial Day parade are coming together. We will have a VERY special Grand Marshal that I will identify next week. In addition, the Marines will once again provide the firing detail and the USCG the Honor Guard. The Boothbay Region Community Band will provide the music which is much appreciated because due to COVID-19 restrictions, they haven't had much of an opportunity to get together to practice. There will be one or two additional entries in the parade that will make this year’s Memorial Day even more special.

It is hoped that ALL veterans will join us in the parade! We are planning on having the trolley in the parade for those veterans who are unable to march.

An extra bonus this year is our Auxiliary will be offering a lunch for all participants and their families at the Legion Hall, time depends on the completion of the parade, typically around 1100-1130. Our Grand Marshall will be available at the lunch to talk with those who join us. Trust me, that will be a real treat!

Flag Day is June 14. In order to enable the school children to participate, the Legion Flag Disposal Ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at the Legion Hall on June 13. This is an opportunity to see just how we honor our American Flag and how much we appreciate the service each flag has provided. We veterans think it is especially important for our youth to understand the importance of our National Flag and the respect the Flag deserves. All in the community are encouraged to attend.

The Legion Yard Sale is once again happening this summer on August 7. We will also be "selling" for $20 10ft X 20ft plots of grass to anyone who would like to join in the yard sale. There is limited space so if you would like to reserve a spot, call 633-4487 or e-mail dapatch@roadrunner.com.

Our next breakfast is this Sunday,  May 23 from 7-9 a.m.  On Mother's Day we had 119 attendees! It was great fun and thanks to all who attended. This all you can eat breakfast is still only $8. If the weather cooperates, we will once again have outside tables.

The next Legion meeting is  June 14. Hot dogs/Hamburgers at 5:30 p.m., the meeting starts at 6 p.m.
