American Legion Post 36

Our first breakfast for the season was last Sunday and it was a great success. The Legion breakfast team didn't lose their touch over the winter and clearly all 68 who attended didn't lose their appetite either. We had a few new faces, some not new to Boothbay but first timers to the breakfast. From the comments I heard, they will be added to our list of regulars. As soon as the weather warms up a little, we will once again have outside seating. And, for those who would rather take out, that is available as well.

As of this writing, the Memorial Day parade is a "tentative" go. Once the Boothbay Harbor selectman give the OK, we will be ready. The Town of Boothbay has given the go ahead, so we are starting to make preparations accordingly. So, all you veterans, young and old, dust off your military cover, and standby to once again "march" united to the memorials of our fallen brothers and sisters of service.

I have talked about Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation (MASR) in previous articles but it is time to talk about MASR again. MASR is all about providing recreational activities for all folks with disabilities. This winter, even with COVID-19, we (I say "we" as I am a volunteer with MASR) were able to get our participants out on the slopes in a number of locations around the state; we snowshoed and cross country skied around Pineland Farms, Bethel, and a few other locations. But the winter season is over and we are now preparing for summer activities, including kayaking, biking (road and mountain), golf, rock climbing, hiking and more. All these activities are 100% free and available for all ages. Every week I talk to folks around town and learn of family members that have some sort disability but never knew these activities were available. Veterans, do you have a disability rating with the VA? If so, join us! For veterans, we have a special long weekend in August that is held at Camp Wavus, again free for veterans and all immediate family members. A wide range of activities are available! Last year, due to COVID, we weren't able to hold the event. This year it is promising that we will be able to hold the camp. To learn more about the summer schedule and to sign up, go to www.maineadaptive.org MASR is always looking for volunteers, so if have experience with any of the sports we will have this summer, check out their website or give them a call at (207) 824-2440.

Another reminder, our local USCG Auxiliary is conducting a two session Zoom webinar titled: Suddenly in Command on April 26 and 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 each night. Call 633-4748, 865-603-5106 or davidbeastwood@gmail.com for more information.

The next breakfast is April 25, 7 to 9 a.m.

The next Post meeting is in person and on Zoom on May 10 at 6 p.m.
