American Legion Post 36

Tue, 09/29/2020 - 10:15am

Lt John Druce has departed our Post and has joined the Legion’s Post Everlasting. Speaking for our entire membership, our comrade John is already missed. John, from an old sailor, “fair winds and following seas.”

A special recognition to Chris Armstead, our Americanism Officer. We all know folks dealing with cancer and many of us have members of our family on the cancer recovery journey. So, Maine’s Dempsey Center makes life better for people managing the impact of cancer at no cost. This year Chris wanted to help make a difference so he participated in the annual Dempsey Challenge (virtual this year) by doing a “marathon” ride on his bike from his home in Edgecomb to Whale Park and back home. Congratulations Chris, well done!

The seminar on Medicare/Tricare/VA Healthcare has firmed up. The ZOOM seminar will be on Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. You can join either at home or come to the Legion. The log in information is URL: https://martinspoint.zoom.us/j/85034153814?pwd=alF3aWZPUlpTb3B5ZkxzQzRTcHFmdz09; Meeting ID: 850 3415 3814; Passcode: 407232. One of the questions most often asked is if I get VA healthcare, do I need to pay for Medicare Part B? another question is, if I am already paying for supplemental insurance, do I need to pay for Part B? This will be an excellent opportunity to get your questions answered and perhaps learn how you might be able to save some money.

September has been National Suicide Awareness month. There is an excellent article in last week’s Register by Linda Durst that states that is all of our responsibility to help prevent suicide. While we know about the high rate of veteran suicide, she points out the alarming fact that suicide “is the second leading cause of for those aged 15 to 24.” Being aware is one thing, being proactive is another. It is simple, but often difficult, just communicate. There are currently two bills on the president’s desk that relate to the prevention of veteran suicide. One expands the eligibility and availability of counseling services opening up VA funded counseling with non-VA counselors. Several others will soon be arriving on the president’s desk.
