American Legion Post 36

Mon, 09/14/2020 - 9:00am

This past Saturday’s yard sale was a huge success! We had record sales and by all accounts, everyone had a good time! The Auxiliary outdid themselves with baked goodies and home-made ice cream cookies. Many thanks to Round Top Ice Cream who provided the ice cream! The Sons of the Legion provided the hot dogs, hamburgers (cheese and bacon if you like) so no one went hungry for sure!

Rear Admiral (RADM) Hugh Wyman Howard III, the newest member of our Post, was sworn in as the new Commander of Naval Special Warfare Command (in charge of all Navy SEALS). The Change of Command ceremony was held in San Diego but fortunately the Post was honored to be able to watch virtually from the Hall. We look forward to seeing RADM Howard next year when he will be our grand marshal for the Memorial Day parade.

It was recently announced that the VA has approved a new residential, 24-bed, substance use disorder rehabilitation and treatment facility on the Togus campus. Currently, veterans who needed this lengthy treatment have to go to out of state, often as far away as New York. Since the treatment is often many months, that is time away from family and their support system. This was a priority for our new VA Togus Healthcare Director, Trayce Davis, when she took over a few years ago, and it was a long time priority for Rep. Golden who actually started this effort when he was in the State Legislator. In Congress, this had bi-partisan support from all four members of our delegation. Construction on the facility will begin in 2021. It is scheduled to begin accepting patients in 2022.

The Hall had its first rental of the season last weekend. Our new audio-visual system was put to the test and was a great success! At Saturday’s yard sale, our outdoor speakers provided music for our customers and volunteers, much to the delight of all! The bi-weekly breakfasts, the yard sale, the Sunday evening “Fellowship” church services, and now our recent rental have proven that the Hall can support events and be in compliance with the state and CDC rules. We are also starting to get an interest in organizations wanting to use the Hall on a regular basis for their meetings. If anyone would like to see the facility the best way would be to come to our breakfast, the next one is this Sunday! Or, you can make an appointment by calling the Hall at 633-4486.

If you are a veteran you are eligible to join the Legion. Even if you don’t think you want to be a member, come to a meeting as our guest just to see what we are all about. Our next meeting is Oct. 12 at 6 p.m.

This Sunday is our all you can eat breakfast buffet! Our monthly special Sunday will be SOS! We’ll see you there!
