American Legion Post 36

The day we remember our fallen heroes, Memorial Day, is less than a month away and we are well into our planning for the event. But, of course, just what the event will look like can’t be determined at this time. The American Legion will be honoring our fallen in some form even if nothing changes between now and then. If nothing changes, we will have a small honor guard of Legionnaires going to each memorial to place the wreaths, throw the Spray into Boothbay Harbor with prayers said. If things do change, we will adapt accordingly. Honoring our fallen military and veterans and still following social distancing and health safety guidelines will be the priority of event. So, all veterans who would normally march in the parade should stand by for what decisions will be made about participation in our Memorial Day honors.

On May 9, the flags will be place at the various cemeteries around region. This event is being coordinated by Jeff Keyes, our Legion Americanism Officer. If anyone knows of a veteran marker that does not have a flag holder, please call the Hall (633-4487) and leave your name and number. We would like to have those holders in place before the 9th. The flags will be taken in on Saturday, June 6. The question is asked each year why the flags can’t be left out all summer. We tried that last summer at Evergreen cemetery. By August, half of the flags were unusable and had to be replaced for this year. So, regrettably, the flags have to be taken in the second Saturday after Memorial Day.

Our Post has achieved 100% membership, thank you all. Please take a look at your membership card to ensure it says 2020. If not, or if you can’t find yours, let Bob Raudenbush know or contact the Hall (633-4487) and leave your name so we can ensure you have an updated card.

Four more trailers for The Legion Sons Homeless project, Veterans Emergency Temporary Shelter have been ordered. Sons Commander, Ed Harmon will start the conversion soon after they arrive. Many thanks for those who have donated thus far.

Since the Legion bottle bin at Hawke Motors is overflowing, and if your garage can manage another bottle bag stored there, you can drop your full bags behind the storage unit at the Hall. but, please make sure they are tightly secured in the bags. They are likely to remain there for a while.

Getting back to normal is still an illusion at this time, but let’s stay safe, protect ourselves and honor the safety of those around us so when we do go back to normal, we are all healthy and ensure a wonderful summer with the crisis behind us and the lessons learned creating a better, more thoughtful society in the future.

Please call the Hall (633- 4487) if you know of a veteran family in need during this difficult time.
