American Legion Post 36

The work in the Legion hall continues on track. Thanks to everyone who helped clear out the kitchen to prepare for cleaning, painting and new floor and new cabinets. Special thanks to the USCG personnel who came to do the heaving lifting! The walls in the “office” and the Hall will be the next to be painted while the contractors work on replacing the floor in the kitchen. We are still on schedule to ensure we have the Hall ready for the Christmas dinner ... and hopefully for the Army/Navy game party on Dec. 14.

As everyone knows, we had four veterans on this past weekend’s Honor Flight — Art Messer, Dick Elliott, Arthur Richardson and Merline “Cush” Gray. Many in the community joined the hundreds who came to their Homecoming on Sunday. I am sure they will be sharing their stories for a very long time. Next year Honor Flight Maine will have five flights, one more that we had in 2019. Essentially, if you are a veteran and over the age of 80, you should most definitely apply to go. You don’t have to have served in a war zone to be eligible. We want to take all veterans ultimately. We have started to bring Vietnam veterans now. This last weekend we had several who applied back in 2014. So, all Vietnam era veterans (or all veterans ages 65 to 80) should apply.

Camp Wavus/Kieve’s annual Vietnam Veterans week is rapidly approaching. All Vietnam veterans and their spouses are invited to spend the week, Dec. 2-6, at Camp Kieve and enjoy a week of relaxation, great food and “hanging out” with our colleagues from that era ... and it is all absolutely free! You don’t have to have served in the Combat Zone, or even had to deploy, to be eligible. Go to the Kieve website https://www.kwe.org/retreats/veterans/ to apply. I regularly attend so if you want to learn more about it, just give me a call.

The November Legion meeting has been canceled due to the work in the Hall. The next meeting will be on Dec. 9, dinner at 5:30 and the meeting at 6. These dinners and the meetings are open to the public. Members are encouraged to bring a friend, a neighbor, veteran or anyone interested in supporting our veteran community.
