American Legion Post 36

Mon, 10/14/2019 - 10:15am

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the American Legion Boothbay Region Auxiliary and the Sons of the Legion for their culinary skills at last Saturday’s annual Awards Dinner. Except for the short panic of being out of propane just when we were to start cooking dinner (see the letter to the editor), the food was terrific and a good time was had by all.

This was the time to recognize those who have gone the extra mile to support the Post. First, we recognized Ben Rumney, William Perkins, Hunter Crocker (who was unable to attend) and Ciera Pitcher and Corinne Ahearn for their participation in Boys State and Girls State, respectively. The young men and women told the attendees what they gained from the program, how much they learned, and the lastly relationships they made with other kids from around the state. Ciera Pitcher was also honored for representing the BRHS in the National Oratorical program. This required that she give first a 10-minute speech on the Constitution followed by a 5-minute speech, on an amendment to the Constitution. For her participation, she was awarded a check for $300! Well done Ciera.

We also recognized our own Jeff Keyes for his outstanding efforts as our Americanism Officer. Boys State, the Oratorical Program and the proper honoring of our nation’s flag and our deceased veterans are the responsibility of the Americanism Officer. Jeff developed new relationships at BRHS to ensure all were aware of the various programs and scholarships that are offered by the Legion. For his exemplary efforts, Jeff received a Certificate of Appreciation, well deserved!

This year we initiated a new community award, the Charles E. Sherman Jr. Award for those in the community that went above and beyond to support the programs of the Legion. This year, we presented the awards to Gerald Gamage for his continued presence at the Memorial Day Parade in Southport, providing appropriate lessons in history and telling stories about the patriotism of those from Southport. In addition, because the volume of Flags that need to be properly destroyed is beyond the capability of the Legion, he stepped to the plate to ensure our flags are destroyed with proper honors. Kevin Burnham was also presented the award for his continued support of the Legion as the editor of the Register. Whether it was enabling articles that were too long or submitted after the deadline, or ensuring events being held by the Legion had appropriate media coverage, Kevin was there, either in person or covered by his staff, so the community knew of the great work of the Post. And, Stephanie Hawke received the award for her “enthusiastic” support of the Legion. Stephanie is one of our faithful breakfast kitchen team, she is there to flip hamburgers at our barbecues, her family members have contributed banners and tents for events and some much more. So, to Gerry, Kevin and Stephanie, thanks so much for all you do for the Legion. This award is so well deserved and is only a small token of our appreciation.

Our next and last breakfast for the season is this Sunday, Oct. 20, 7 to 9 a.m. I hope we have great turnout to end the year!
