About Maine AllCare

Dear Editor:

As an occasional visitor to the Boothbay area I read with interest Mike and Kathy Loewe’s December 3 letter about the Boothbay Region Health Center. I was particularly impressed by the emphasis on, and apparent excellence of, the primary care provided there. Indeed, according to the Center’s website, there seems to be a great need for this care, given the significant problems of heart disease, cancer, substance abuse, suicidal ideation, obesity, and limited access to health care generally in Lincoln County. How sobering it was to read that the community has to hold fundraisers to support the Center’s vital work.

Since retiring from my own medical practice, I have become increasingly interested in what is variously called Improved Medicare for All, single-payer, or, more clumsily, government-provided, privately-provided universal health care. Reading the Loewes’ piece, I couldn’t help thinking how such a system could benefit residents of the Boothbay area. If any readers are interested in learning more about this equitable and cost-effective health care system, I would be happy to hear from them, or would direct them to the website (www.maineallcare.org) of the non-profit advocacy organization I work with, Maine AllCare.
