World-Class Jazz Concert to Raise Funds

Event has passed

The only thing better than supporting programming for our local children is supporting this programming by listening to a world-class jazz concert on the shores of the world’s most beautiful harbor.

But you can do exactly that by coming to the fundraising Jazz concert BHML is holding in partnership with the Boothbay Sea and Science Center (BSSC) on Saturday, July 20.

The Marcus and Riza Printup Quartet will play two sets at The Shipyard at Boothbay Harbor (formerly Sample’s Shipyard) beginning at 7 p.m. The quartet played here last year to benefit the BSSC, garnering rave reviews.

Marcus Printup is a Georgia-born trumpeter who has been playing with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in New York City under director Wynton Marsalis since 1993. You can hear him play “Up a Lazy River” with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra here.

Riza Printup is a classically trained harpist who began formally studying jazz at college. She has performed onstage with Lady Gaga for an Elton John tribute concert (here’s a link to “Your Song,” where you can see Riza and her harp right next to Lady Gaga’s piano). Riza is also on faculty at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Early Childhood Jazz Education Program.

They’ll be joined by Kevin Smith on bass and Henry Conerway III on drums.

Ticketholders will be treated to private tour of the Ernestina Morrissey, currently undergoing restoration at The Shipyard, at 6:00 p.m. before the show; doors to the concert open at 6:30. Coffee and desserts will be available during the set break, and a cash bar will be open.

Tickets are $100 and are available through our website (https://bbhlibrary.org/2019jazz/) and the BSSC website (https://boothbayseaandsciencecenter.org/save-the-dates-for-summertime-jazz/); call or drop by the library if you’d rather pay with cash or a check.

The grown-ups’ concert will be followed by a FREE children’s concert on Sunday, July 21, at 2:00 p.m., also at The Shipyard.

In this show, Riza Printup and Friends will present I Have a Song Inside My Heart, a program that blends literacy and jazz to show children the power of music and storytelling.

Please register for this event via our website (https://bbhlibrary.org/2019jazzkids/).

Both concerts are all-weather events.
