Boothbay Region YMCA Penguin Plunge - 17th Annual

Date: Tuesday January 1, 2019 at 11 am

Location: Murray Hill Boat Launch, East Boothbay

Recognition:

Each year the Penguin Plunge Committee decides on a person or organization to recognize, who supports the YMCA Mission and community involvement.

This year Ted and Betty Repa (back row, 3rd and 4th from left) will be recognized for the work they do in the Boothbay   Community. Both are active users of the Y. Betty plays tennis and Ted participates in aqua aerobics. Betty continues        volunteering at the front desk, and in the past, Ted has served on the Y’s board. They are also involved with the Boothbay Region Community Resource Council with Ted currently serving as its board chair. Since their move to Boothbay in 2001, they have co-facilitated twenty-one adult religious education courses for community members before the worship service at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor where they are active members. There, they have jointly led the last capital campaign, and Ted has served as deacon and its clerk. Betty served two terms on the Student Aid Fund and currently serves on the Harbor Theater Membership Committee working to keep the theater open year round. Both formerly served on the board of the Juniper Point Village Improvement Society. Additional ad hoc community committee volunteer efforts include focus on increasing affordable housing on the peninsula and increasing technical education and college education             opportunities in the region.

Participants: Hannah and Byran Hills are participants in the YMCA Dolphin Swim Team will be part of the kick-off for this event. Both Hannah and Byran are raising funds through sponsorships to participate in the Penguin Plunge, and have done this event several times in the past. Byran is currently a second grade student receiving free water safety lessons through the YMCA with instructor and co-director of the Plunge, Dan Parrott.

History: The Penguin Plunge first started in 2001 as an event where “Penguin Plungers” would run into the chilly water and through pledges/donations help support aquatics program at the YMCA. Starting in 2007, all the funds raised have been dedicated to pay for free swim lessons for all 2nd grade students in the Boothbay Region.

2019 Goal: This year we will be raising funds to serve not only the Boothbay Region schools, but to include The Great Salt Bay second grade classrooms as well.

Come out and support this great event!!
