On Saturday, May 28, author Sarah Sherman McGrail, with help from family and friends, held a “Welcome Home” party at the Southport Town Hall for area veterans (and others who showed up) featured in her recently published books, “Look Back, Volumes I and II.”

Despite the hot and humid conditions, inside and out, dozens of veterans and their family members were treated to food, music, displays, contests and presentations. There was a classic car display in the Hall’s parking lot and McGrail signed many copies of her books.

One of the many highlights of the party was the presentation of a Bronze Star and a flag flown over the White House to Boothbay resident and Vietnam veteran Dennis Andrews. Andrews’ Bronze Star was lost in the mail 45 years ago and a representative from Senator Susan Collins’ office, Charles Malharis, made the presentation. McGrail also announced that she is working on securing Purple Heart medals for Vietnam veterans Barry Sherman and Pat Farrin, both of Boothbay.

The Boothbay Register would like to thank Vietnam veteran and Southport resident Jim Singer for providing these photos of the event.
