Yellow carnation

Dear Editor:

It was Tuesday morning, June 7, right before the downpour. I walked into the cozy gloom of the Red Cup Coffeehouse created by the clouds of people waiting for their caffeine fix and hiding from the rainstorm.

Without any hesitation, I joined Dan and started to grind coffee beans, run espresso shots, steam milk and more … After a while, yet still in the peak of this rush, I felt a gentle touch on my shoulder. I turned my head and there was a little girl (about 10 years old). She smiled at me and said, “I hope you have a nice day,” and then she tried to pass me a blossom. Due to the low light in the room and noises surrounding me, I wasn’t able to evaluate this fast enough. I wasn’t sure what was happening. I leaned down a bit closer to her and asked her for a moment. But the little girl just smiled, took a deeper breath and a bit louder repeated to me, “I hope you have a nice day.” Then she placed the yellow carnation next to me and walked away.

I finished with the milk and caught her on the rainy street walking happily – unbelievably happily. I asked her right there, “Who sent you to me?” She just smiled and said to me one more time, “I hope you have a nice day,” then she reached out and gave me great hug!

I thanked her and was left speechless and touched there in the rain and it felt like the dry spots in my soul had just been watered.

Later that day, I walked to Boothbay Region Greenhouses to do some detective work. All I was told was that this little girl bought five carnations for five special people to spread cheer and love.

I would like to again say "thank you" to this little girl. It worked! I had a nice day and every day since then.

And, maybe when it rains again, you would like to stop by at the Red Cup Coffeehouse for a hot chocolate? Even if it doesn’t rain, please stop by for a cookie, lemonade or just a chat.

I would like us to become friends.
