Scott Isaac of Central Valley, Calif. (currently living in Warren) took home the $200 grand prize as the winner of the 10th annual Wannawaf waffle eating contest held on August 9 in Boothbay Harbor.

Second place went to Nick Scott of Boothbay, and third to Sean Muir of Ashland, Ore. Eleven waffle-eaters competed in total.

Along with the contest, which had a $20 entrance fee, money was raised from a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. Many of the items at the auction were donated by local businesses, such as a bracelet from A Silver Lining and a gift certificate to Shannon's Unshelled lobster shack. This year's beneficiary was Boothbay Region Community Resources, which helps out people in need in the community.

In total the event raised $6,300.

“BRCR is a great organization,” said Anya Heyl, owner of Wannawaf. “Michaela Stone, the Community Navigator, does a wonderful job and is willing to listen when people need help. And all the community churches come together, helping people whether they need heating oil or wood or food. We are fortunate to have a resource like this.”

A large part of the money raised was a $5,000 donation made by Paul Coulombe of Southport. Coulombe also donated a round of golf for four at the Boothbay Harbor County Club as part of the silent auction, a $600 value.

“I was blown away by the generosity this year,” Heyl said.

Boothbay Harbor Police Chief Bob Hasch also pitched in, appearing as a new superhero “Man Hand Strength” to stand alongside Heyl's “Waffle Girl.”

“I'm very glad to be a part of this,” Chief Hasch said. “Boothbay Region Community Resources is a great organization, and I'm happy to help out however I can.”
