Will miss Jan

    Dear Editor:

Arthur Carter's remembrance of Jan Beaver in the June 16th "Register" moved us to add this tribute.

Jan Beaver was next door ever since we bought the Macaulay house on Union Street 34 years ago. At first we had no idea why the place next door was so overgrown and disheveled. But after meeting Jan and hearing a couple years of her rants about preserving nature by letting things grow, we realized what a gem she was.
We never truly knew her socially as we weren't around consistently. But her example of dog-paddling at high tide and loving and leaving the inner harbor as is made us fast friends. She taught our daughters to enjoy the simple beauty of the harbor.

She watched our house when we weren't around and helped us keep it up on many occasions. When we were up a few weeks ago, Jan was in true form describing the hummingbirds we had missed in our quince bush that she monitored constantly. Her enthusiasm for nature was a joy to behold.
Our family and friends who have met her over the years were enriched by the acquaintance. We will miss her.
