Letter to the Editor

Why I support Chris Johnson

Mon, 08/11/2014 - 12:30pm

    Dear Editor:

I am grateful to Sen. Chris Johnson for many things: his sensible and sensitive grasp of issues which affect us all, as well as his lucid analyses of the issues in his weekly columns in our local newspapers.

I will continue to vote for Chris Johnson for these reasons: As chairman of the Marine Resources Committee, his collaboration with Rep. Mick Devin in support of action to reduce if not remove the acidification of the ocean; his local support of Bigelow Laboratory oceanographic projects; his efforts to improve protection of our inland lakes, and to strengthen the powers of the Department of Environmental Protection, which have eroded in recent years.

As a member of the Education Committee, he advocates full state funding for our public schools, ultimately to achieve the long-stalled 55 percent level. I take heart from his deep commitment to STEM education, his efforts to increase suicide awareness and prevention in schools, his opposition to 1) allowing guns in schools, 2) to the state's proposed take-over of failing schools, 3) voucher systems, and 4) lifting the cap on charter schools.

All in all, his public service defines the true meaning of representation. I will be proud to vote for his continued service as our state senator.
