Who’s the imposter?

Wed, 08/02/2017 - 8:30am

A Monday morning phone call tipped us off to “another” possible imposter. We say “another” because we heard recently of a woman going around town saying she writes for the New York Times and that she  would “like to promote your business” by writing an article. One business owner told us she was not what she claims to be.

The newest tip came from an anonymous caller who asked if her dog, a black Lab, was going to be featured in a story about the annual Mutt Scrub, held on Saturday, July 29. The caller said “a fairly thin woman, in her late 50s, early 60s, with short cropped hair and carrying a nice camera, said she was a reporter from the Boothbay Register and would she mind if ‘I took a few photos of your dog for the story.’” Well, I explained that we had a male reporter covering that event (see page 1, section II) and that I would check around the office to find out. The caller stayed on the phone for a few minutes, and then hung up after I told her that we didn’t have anyone here at the office fitting that description or anyone who might have been writing the story as a contributor. I asked one of our news contributors and she said she was there, but she asked dog owners if it was all right to post their dogs’ photos on her Facebook website. She didn’t represent herself as a Register reporter.

We supply business cards, or an ID card, to our reporters when they go out to cover events. Let us know if you suspect someone is posing as one of our reporters – and get names and photos if you can.
