‘Where Our Oceans Meet’

Story Location:

On Thursday, Aug. 24 From 3 - 5 pm, join the Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT) at 8 Oak Point Rd, Boothbay Harbor, for an  engaging talk exploring the connections between island living in Micronesia and the The Gulf of Maine from 3-5 p.m.

Aylie Baker and Miano Sowraenpiy  have served as caretakers this summer on BRLT’s Damariscove Island preserve. After a summer living on Damariscove, Miano and Aylie are excited to share some of the parallels they see between stewardship practice in Maine and Micronesia.

Aylie grew up in Yarmouth, and when she was 22 traveled to the Micronesia to study storytelling. There she met her partner, Miano, aboard the traditional sailing canoe, the Alingano Maisu. Miano has been working as crew on the canoe under his uncle, Master Navigator (Pwo) Sesario Sewralur, supporting the continuance of a navigation tradition from Miano's home island of Satawal that is thousands of years old.

They will share a little bit about what it is like to sail without compass, maps, or GPS, using only the stars and the heavenly bodies, the paths of migrating sea creatures, and the patterns of wind, cloud, and waves to find their way. Together with attendees, they will explore how recovering wayfinding practice in coastal communities might offer insight and direction for protecting our shared ocean and our blue planet.

This inside event is limited to 20 participants with registration required.
