Westport Island Column: Free Thanksgiving dinner in Wiscasset

Thu, 11/27/2014 - 8:00am

    Another T-shirt Sunday!

Hopefully a few good days help with roof repairs, switching screens out for window inserts, planting bulbs and driveway markers before the ground freezes. Comical, really, how ideas and things-to-do just keep coming as the temperature drops!

Congratulations to hard-working Susan Partelow, who received the Spirit of America Award last week at the Lincoln County ceremony.  Smart, dedicated, funny and generous with her time — well-deserved!

Up for something different, but familiar?  The Wiscasset Community Center is whipping up a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner this Thursday from noon to 5 p.m. Come one, come all — no charge.

Enjoy the company of neighbors from the area and leave the cooking to Bob MacDonald and his wife: turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, squash, peas, carrots, cranberry sauce, apple and pumpkin pies! All donations will go to the town’s Santa fund.

Are you pulling out your favorite holiday sweaters? Erin Bailey is hosting a Pampered Chef Ugly Sweater party at her house (31 Colby Rd) on Saturday, Nov. 29 from 5-7 p.m.  Grab your ugliest sweater and your ugliest oven mitt. There’ll be food and games, and of course, a prize for the ugliest sweater and a chance to win a new oven mitt. Sounds like a hoot!

Those energetic folks on Birch Point Road with their yard full of Christmas decorations — hard to top that! Once the white stuff gets here in the days ahead, I hope you’ll be unraveling your family’s favorite outdoor lights.

When the calendar flips next week, be sure you’ve got the annual Christmas Program jotted down for Sunday, Dec. 7. The program, at 7 p.m. in the Community Church, will feature solos by island residents, including a piano solo by a young resident, and songs for all to sing. If you can, please keep the giving spirit going by bringing donations for the Island Cottage Pantry.

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving with new recipes that work, lively talk, fun games, and comfy shoes and bail money for Black Friday (just kidding — we’re all well-behaved shoppers, right?).
