We need an independent investigation

Mon, 02/27/2017 - 4:15pm

    Dear Editor:

Tell Senator Susan Collins we require a fully independent investigation into Russia’s involvement in our elections and the Trump administration and associates.

On Maine Calling today, Wednesday, Feb. 21, I listened to Susan Collins tell a caller who asked for an independent investigation into Russian involvement in the elections and the Trump administration, she thinks her usual Senate National Security Council is just fine as the venue for the Trump-Russia investigation. She said that committee has already started by requesting the retention of all documents from a host of parties. She thinks it will be free from partisan bias and praised its members and how it was balanced across party lines except for the Chair.

I believe she misses a critical point: It does not matter what you think, Susan; it matters what the people of Maine and the nation think.

Anything less than a full, independent investigation will be viewed as suspect because of the very real chance that top-level Republicans were/are involved. Therefore, the investigation must be fully independent and fully empowered, just like the 911 commission.

I call on Senator Collins to demand the creation of an independent commission for this most critical investigation. I also encourage everyone to spread the word, sign petitions and use your social media, asking everyone to loudly demand the investigation must be fully independent and fully empowered. Nothing less will resolve this, the most important National Security Issue our nation has ever faced.

Finally, Angus King already understands this and has spoken that he clearly is demanding an independent investigation.
