Vote yes on local articles 2, 3 and 4

Dear Editor:

I am new to the Boothbay region and have fallen in love with the area's natural beauty and the people that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I’ve had the opportunity to be involved with some local nonprofit organizations and I’ve met a lot of wonderful people who care so much about the community we live in. The sense of community in Boothbay is very endearing.

As a Boothbay Harbor Country Club employee, I’ve also had the opportunity to talk with people who come into the newly renovated clubhouse for the first time. For most, their reaction is simply, “Wow!” This is significant because the investment made into this new state of the art facility and the amenities it provides has become a draw for people who may not have visited Boothbay otherwise. These new visitors are staying in local inns, dining at local restaurants and shopping at local retail stores. They are providing an economic boost to the area, as are the 100-plus employees of BHCC who are also happily supporting local businesses.

I truly believe that Boothbay is lucky to have a generous philanthropist who has given so much to so many charitable organizations. I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Paul Coulombe and I can tell you that he gives from the heart. He genuinely cares about the well-being of people in the Boothbay region and the economic success of the area.

My hope is that people will understand that the upcoming vote on Nov. 8 is an opportunity that should not be missed. It’s a chance to address the confusing, triangular intersection that the DOT has deemed a failed intersection, one that will eventually have to be addressed. It’s a chance to improve safety, traffic flow and beautify the area with additional green space, sidewalks and a bike path that extends all the way to Adams Pond.

Voting yes on Articles 2, 3 and 4 will allow Boothbay residents to take advantage of this opportunity to make the much needed improvements to the Route 27 corridor at a time when it will not increase taxes. Take advantage now when 2/3 of the funding is coming from the Maine DOT and a private donation.
