Vote for Shenna Bellows

    Dear Editor:

The Camerons’ letter (Wiscasset Newspaper, Sept. 4) was excellent. It stuck the right note of the urgent need for political change. Keeping the Camerons’ nautical metaphor (“Collins has lost her anchor”), I concur, and I would add: Sen. Susan Collins has lost her direction and is drifting away from her mooring through compromise and the status quo.

Status quo goes nowhere; it means stuck in “same old.” Collins is heading us for the rocks.

Maine’s working families in many of our counties “live” below the poverty level. They struggle to make ends meet; they struggle desperately to feed their families. As a result, taxpayers have to foot the bills for their food stamps and healthcare.

In spite of this dire situation, Collins has consistently blocked an increase in the minimum wage, voting the party line.

Shenna Bellows, running for the U.S. Senate seat, offers us an excellent alternative. She is confident and qualified to take on the “old guard.”

As a former executive director of the Maine branch of the American Civil Liberties Union, she has addressed many human rights issues, as well as the growing inequalities in our state and our country, and the huge disparity between the rich and the poor.

Bellows has the training, the courage, the charisma and the dedication to uphold the dignity of ordinary citizens. Shenna Bellows comes from a modest, hard-working Maine family, which had no running water or electricity until she reached fifth grade. She knows what she is talking about.

I urge you to vote for Shenna Bellows for the U.S. Senate. We need her new strong voice to keep our ship on course.

    Rev. Bobsy Dudley-Thompson
